When generations of families think of the “Sheehy Funeral Home” name when they have a loss of a loved one, it’s feelings of pride, humility, and loyalty that comes to mind.
Jim Sheehy thinks about his grandfather and his uncles, who all worked to ensure there was trust and equity in the Sheehy name, looking down on his brother Bob and him. It both inspires and motives both of them to continue the legacy of service that has eclipsed a full century.
Suffering a loss, be it expected or tragic in nature, is very difficult for people. What is most comforting during those moments is to know who to call, and knowing they will know precisely what needs to be done so your family can concentrate on their family members and friends. The Sheehy Family has been that family that people on the Southwest Side of Chicago could rely on to take care of all the big things and little things connected to making sure your loved one’s life is celebrated in the most appropriate way. Quite simply, these brothers have grown up learning this and then doing this their entire lives. Their staff are just like family when it comes to compassion, concern and professionalism. You’ll notice this immediately, when you feel confident and comforted that they will see to everything you need. It’s their honor to do so.
We’re here 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year to help families, For any questions about our Services, Memorials, Cremation, Pre-Planning or At-Need, Contact us at (708) 857-7878
Bob Sheehy “Choosing a Funeral Home is determined mostly by Reputation & Location”
Historically, Sheehy Funeral Homes have been in the center of close-knit parishes and strong faith communities on the south and southwest side of the city of Chicago. From our original location at 76th and Halsted in the heart of St. Sabina and St. Leo to Orland Park in 1988 and the many wonderful growing parishes and congregations. Bob and Jim Sheehy were always connected to a part of those close-knit communities. While they could choose their location as the metropolitan area kept growing and expanding, it was vital to continue to earn the remarkable reputation and legacy left to them by the generation of the Sheehy Family before them. That Legacy of Service and Reputation now extends over 100 years.
That’s a long, proud legacy that isn’t matched by many family owned and operated entities. As Jim Segredo points out, “People all over the southside who grew up and knew the neighborhoods so well, all understood the Sheehy’s were there for them, always.” It could have been St. Sabina or St. Leo, or these days, St. Michael, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Francis of Assisi, Our Lady of the Woods, St. Bernard, St. George, St. Julie Billiart, St. Stephens, Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church St. Albert the Great, St. Bede the Venerable, St. Damien, in addition to Parkview Christian Church, Christ Lutheran and All Saints Lutheran Church. In fact, annually we visit over 70 different worship spaces for our families’ arrangements. It’s a privilege to serve in each and every place.
Jim Sheehy describes the southwest side of Chicago and south suburbs as “this is truly a very unique and very special place”. It simply can’t be stated better.
It all started at 76th & Halsted nestled between St. Sabina and St. Leo Parishes and it continues 3 generations and over 100 years later within close proximity to 5 large parishes in Orland Park. Being nearby and convenient for families on the southwest side of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs is important. More important is that we live up to the reputation built over 3 generations and return the kindness and compassion to the neighborhoods, parishes and congregations we’ve been so fortunate to serve.
Our location in Burbank continues to serve communities and parishes in the near south suburbs. Something that remains consistent through more than a century is how many families have carried their neighborhoods and the neighborhood feeling with them no matter where they’ve moved to along the way. It’s still the southwest side of Chicago and as Jim Sheehy describes it so accurately: “it’s truly a very unique place”.
“It’s truly remarkable to us how loyal families have been to our family”, is how Jim Sheehy describes the feeling. Along with his brother Bob, they are the “sons” in Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home, with locations in Orland Park and Burbank. The Sheehy name and services is measured not in years or decades, but a century. For 3 generations, the family has been providing funeral services on the south, and southwest side and suburbs of Chicago. So many of the families are families that have been served by Jim and Bob’s grandfather, father and uncles, and now it’s their honor to serve.
“Our name and reputation is important to us because of the generations who served our community before us. To know that when people are experiencing their most difficult and trying times in life, they are choosing us to help them is a very humbling feeling and a great honor for us”, states Jim Sheehy. He adds, “the southwest side of Chicago is among the most unique places there is. The closeness of families and the loyalty among them is incredibly special”.

Willie Winters is a long time Southsider, a neighborhood guy. WE STRIVE TO OFFER PEOPLE OPTIONS; INCLUDING SEVERAL CREMATION SERVICE OPTIONS
Cremation has become a more requested service in the past several years. The increase in requests for cremation have resulted from a number of different preferences that range from cost, to a desire to have ashes spread in memorial in special places, to even environmental concerns for space. At Sheehy, we provide a full range of cremation services that include a direct cremation or more traditional services that conclude with cremation. These services include, but are not limited to, a Visitation in our chapel, a Church Memorial Service which can be personalized with family photographs, video and memorabilia or even an outdoor Memorial Garden Service. In the case of a Memorial Service, we can provide Memorial Registry Books, Memorial Service folders, Flag Cases, Personal Floral Tributes, or a number of other options that can facilitate a dignified service. Among other faiths, the Roman Catholic Church has included in its Rite of Christian Burial, and approved the burial of cremation remains in consecrated ground.
Sheehy Funeral Home offers a large selection of urns and containers for families to choose from for burial or safe keeping. We also provide suitable containers if your loved one’s wishes include placing their remains in final resting places of their choosing. Cremation is a key part of the full range of services available to honor and celebrate the life of your loved one.
