What’s in a name? 3 Generations of Commitment, that’s what.

When generations of families think of the “Sheehy Funeral Home” name when they have a loss of a loved one, it’s feelings of pride, humility, and loyalty that comes to mind.

Jim Sheehy thinks about his grandfather and his uncles, who all worked to ensure there was trust and equity in the Sheehy name, looking down on his brother Bob and him. It both inspires and motives both of them to continue the legacy of service that has eclipsed a full century.

Suffering a loss, be it expected or tragic in nature, is very difficult for people. What is most comforting during those moments is to know who to call, and knowing they will know precisely what needs to be done so your family can concentrate on their family members and friends. The Sheehy Family has been that family that people on the Southwest Side of Chicago could rely on to take care of all the big things and little things connected to making sure your loved one’s life is celebrated in the most appropriate way. Quite simply, these brothers have grown up learning this and then doing this their entire lives. Their staff are just like family when it comes to compassion, concern and professionalism. You’ll notice this immediately, when you feel confident and comforted that they will see to everything you need. It’s their honor to do so.

We’re here 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year to help families, For any questions about our Services, Memorials, Cremation, Pre-Planning or At-Need, Contact us at (708) 857-7878

Memorial Services offer options

Memorial Services are beyond popular these days. Families are planning this method of celebrating life in a manner that meets the needs of all the “Loved ones loved ones” Having less pressure on time and date enable many families to accommodate many more guests than might have been able to attend a visitation or funeral service otherwise.

Bill Kiley of Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home advises families of all of their options to celebrate the life of their family and loved ones. Memorial Services have increasingly grown in popularity as families have become more spread out and travel difficulties and restrictions have placed some burden on close friends and family being able to attend on short notice.

As Bill Kiley states, “Any way we can ease the pressure and offer comfort to families at a time of loss, it’s our responsibility to do so, and we take it very seriously. We will accommodate their wants and needs, and we will absolutely make sure they know this kind of service is available to them.”

Bob Sheehy “Choosing a Funeral Home is determined mostly by Reputation & Location”

Bob Sheehy “Choosing a Funeral Home is determined mostly by Reputation & Location”

Historically,  Sheehy Funeral Homes have been in the center of close-knit parishes and strong faith communities on the south and southwest side of the city of Chicago. From our original location at 76th and Halsted in the heart of St. Sabina and St. Leo to Orland Park in 1988 and the many wonderful growing parishes and congregations. Bob and Jim Sheehy were always connected to a part of those close-knit communities. While they could choose their location as the metropolitan area kept growing and expanding, it was vital to continue to earn the remarkable reputation and legacy left to them by the generation of the Sheehy Family before them. That Legacy of Service and Reputation now extends over 100 years.

That’s a long, proud legacy that isn’t matched by many family owned and operated entities. As Jim Segredo points out, “People all over the southside who grew up and knew the neighborhoods so well, all understood the Sheehy’s were there for them, always.” It could have been St. Sabina or St. Leo, or these days, St. Michael, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Francis of Assisi, Our Lady of the Woods, St. Bernard, St. George, St. Julie Billiart, St. Stephens, Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church St. Albert the Great, St. Bede the Venerable, St. Damien, in addition to Parkview Christian Church, Christ Lutheran and All Saints Lutheran Church. In fact, annually we visit over 70 different worship spaces for our families’ arrangements. It’s a privilege to serve in each and every place.

Jim Sheehy describes the southwest side of Chicago and south suburbs as “this is truly a very unique and very special place”.  It simply can’t be stated better.

Testimonials

We refer to the kind notes we receive  as “Roses”.  In the midst of this very difficult time of the Covid Virus,  where it’s a  daily challenge to comfort and assist families in the manner that they truly deserve, we are trying our best to to do so.

And so, this Rose, from Maria Michelon, thanking us for taking care of her father Vito Mannino, means a great deal to us. We’re humbled. We’re honored. Thank you Maria, it was absolutely our privilege to serve your father and your family.

Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home.

Dear Staff at Sheehy Funeral Home,

I wanted to drop you a note of enormous thanks. My Dad passed away on April 27th and was waked and memorialized at your funeral home. The unbelievable professionalism, empathy and care extended to us by your entire team (Bill, Mike, Chris, Linda, your late-night answering service and many more) was indeed second to none. It is understandably overwhelming for individuals to wrap their heads around the loss of a loved one. Making the necessary arrangements can tilt the emotional scale; however, your team handled everything from A to Z without a hitch, and, due to Covid-19, everything was done via phone and/or e-mail. Your work, collectively, is praiseworthy. Thank you for such a peaceful memorial service.

The entire Mannino family will forever be grateful.

Best,

Maria Michelon (Daughter of Vito Mannino)

At Sheehy Funeral Home, Cremation comes with many options

Cremation has become more common in the last several years. As Families come to us with that decision already made, often by the deceased person, they aren’t always sure what other options are available. And there are many. At Sheehy Funeral Home, we remain committed to offering every possible option we can to families when it comes to final arrangements for their loved ones.

Funeral Director & Manager Bill Kiley explains that the range of services includes everything from a Direct Cremation all the way up to a full service arrangements including burial or inurnment into a mausoleum. “Families are often not aware of all of the different options available to them with Cremation, even including a Memorial Service at a later date to make it easier for people to attend”, according to Bill. The visitation services have evolved with beautiful flower arrangements to host urns. These visitations can include most of what traditional services include. Memorial Services can be indoors or outdoors in a Memorial Garden. For Veterans, there is dedicated space at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery for inurnment of remains with full military honors. All of our services can be personalized according to the wishes of families with photographs, video displays, registry books, service folders, flag cases, personal floral tributes or other themes and motifs providing dignified services for your loved one.

Our mission is to provide the services you wish. We coordinate closely with Liturgical Directors and Bereavement Directors in all of our Faith Communities.  In the Roman Catholic Church, within its Rite of Christian Burial, the burial of cremation remains in consecrated grounds has been approved. We have a full selection of urns. “We are here to ensure families can celebrate the life of their loved ones in the manner they’ve chosen with the full range of options available to them”, reaffirms Bill Kiley.

Keeping the Sheehy name strong mattered to our Grandfather and our Father

It’s humbling to know that over generations of service, our family name is the one that comes to mind when they’ve experienced a loss. For over 100 years, we’ve been privileged to serve families during their most difficult times. “How loyal people have been to us is truly remarkable”, says Jim Sheehy when reflecting on his grandfather, father and uncles who started and continued a legacy of service that now exceeds a century.

Brothers Bob and Jim continue to gratefully return the loyalty of families on the south and southwest sides of Chicago, along with an outstanding staff of professionals who continue to keep the promises of 3 generations of the Robert J. Sheehy & Sons family. When you need us we’re here, as we have been for a long time. There’s no greater honor than families choosing the Sheehy Family to assist them.

We’re here 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year to help families, with locations in Orland Park and in Burbank. For any questions about our Services, Memorials, Cremation, Pre-Planning or At-Need, Contact us at (708) 857-7878

Reputation and Location make a huge difference

If you ask Bob and Jim Sheehy what some of the most important factors are for a Funeral Home serving families, they’ll tell you it’s about “Reputation and Location”. Both of those are things you build.

Bob shares that Sheehy Chapels have always been located among and between very large parishes in the Chicago Archdiocese; St. Sabina and St. Leo in the early days, and generations later in St. In fact, annually we have services going to over 70 different worship spaces. It’s a privilege to serve so many faith communities.

When Jim Sheehy discusses the southside of Chicago and southwest suburbs, he wistfully states, “this is truly a very unique place”. And it is. Native southsider Jim Segredo shares that these families have been part of a larger community for generations, and in every instance, the Sheehy Family stood ready to serve them and take care of their every need. Building that reputation over 3 generations is something Bob and Jim Sheehy consider to be the most important mission in the legacy of their family’s commitment to service. As Bob Sheehy puts it, “from 76th & Halsted, to 79th St. to 151st, one thing that has always remained consistent is that you’re still from the neighborhood”.

The neighborhood is and always has been home to us and the families we are blessed to serve.

Bob Sheehy was equal parts friend and professional when I needed both.

Pat Byrne and Bob Sheehy were friends for decades. When Pat experienced an extremely difficult loss, Bob Sheehy was among the very first people Pat reached out to. Reflecting on the experience Pat shares that he really didn’t know how Bob was able to be the incredible friend he needed on a personal level, and the extraordinary professional on another level. While profoundly grieving with Pat, Bob took care of everything that was needed and according to Pat “left no stone unturned to make sure every last detail was taken care of perfectly.” If you know Bob Sheehy and the Sheehy family this may not surprise you. Generations of their family have been taking care of generations of families on the South and Southwest sides of the city and suburbs for more than a century. This particular situation was emotionally and painfully close for Bob, but he understood the roles he needed to fill for his lifelong friend.
“The families who have trusted us have been interconnected to our family before my involvement. “My brother Jim and I learned from our dad and our uncles how important that covenant is with families and we’ve done our best to pass on and explain that feeling to every professional at our funeral home and ensure that is how we always conduct our services. We are a family taking care of our extended family of people who’ve trusted us for over a hundred years.” That’s how you define “The Sheehy Way”.
It’s a privilege to have your trust. One we take seriously every day.

Leo High School to honor Sheehy with Lions Legacy Award

Leo HS to honor Sheehy with Lions Legacy Award

Robert “Bob” Sheehy has a knack for recognizing those in need and an equally valuable gift for rallying others to answer the call with him.

Sheehy’s philanthropy inspired Leo High School to recognize him with its most prestigious honor. Sheehy, a 1971 Leo graduate, will receive the Leo Lions Legacy Award for lifetime achievement at Leo’s fourth annual scholarship benefit at the Four Seasons Hotel in December.

However, Sheehy will be just another golfer on Wednesday, Aug. 7, when the Leo Alumni Association hosts its annual golf outing at Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont. Sheehy’s modesty masks the hard work he puts in behind the scenes at Leo and elsewhere.

A longtime member of the Leo Advisory Board and its current president, Sheehy played a pivotal role in devising and implementing the strategy that enabled Leo to keep going after the Christian Brothers of Ireland severed ties to the school in 1992. He has remained involved with school leadership ever since. “Bob embodies ‘Facta non Verba,’” said Leo President Dan McGrath. “He has been a great help to me since the day I started working at Leo. Not many people have contributed as much to Leo over the years and in as many ways as Bob has. This award is a fitting acknowledgement of what he has meant to us.” Sheehy is the fourth recipient of the Leo Lions Legacy Award, following Andy McKenna, Class of ’47, Bill Conlon ’63 and Tom Owens ’54. Alumni from the 1940s, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s are now represented.

A standout receiver for the Lions, Sheehy continued his football career on scholarship at Purdue University, graduating in 1975. He and his brother, Jim Sheehy, Leo ’77, operate Robert J. Sheehy and Sons Funeral Homes in Burbank and Orland Park. Sheehy’s philanthropy extends well beyond Leo. A conversation with like-minded friends provided inspiration for a group now known as The Mulliganeers, a non-profit dedicated to raising the trajectory of needy people’s lives throughout the Chicago area, especially when children are involved. Rather than respond individually to those in the throes of misfortune, The Mulliganeers decided to pool their resources and find strength in numbers until many hands made for light work.

“We each recruited 10 guys and got more,” Sheehy said. “The amazing thing was so many guys knew each other. We knew we were on to something.” With a mission to provide assistance for those in need, The Mulliganeers have raised $5.7 million and helped 392 families out of hardship since 1995. “The Mulliganeers exemplify all of the great qualities that are Bob Sheehy,” said Ed Kearney, a 1973 Leo graduate and Mulliganeers board member. “In turn, Bob exemplifies all that is great and generous in the mission of The Mulliganeers. “Where ever Bob Sheehy bring his talents, he does a masterful job of utilizing everyone’s talents and bringing people along and into the fold who can contribute to the mission.”

Funeral Services with an “Air of Dignity”, Always

“Just the way the Sheehy’s conducted themselves, there was an Air of Dignity, always” ~ Willie Winters, lifelong Southsider

Children who grew up on the South and Southwest sides of Chicago went to a lot of wakes. Your parents brought you. Your grandparents brought you. Your neighbors brought you. It was something you were expected to do, just as generations of your family had done; pay respects to the family who had a loss. The communities and parishes were tight on the southside and the southwest suburbs so many of the families migrated to. Ask a southsider where they’re from and they’ll likely give you the name of a Parish, a neighborhood or the cross streets. More than likely you’ll get all three and then a full report of the families who lived on the block. If a neighborhood person did really well and got a law degree, became an MD or got a PhD; they’d still tell you where they went to high school first!

Willie Winters is a neighborhood guy. Active in the community his entire life, engaged with St. Xavier, the Beverly Area Planning Committee, many political activities and a long list of community service performed over decades, he remembers generations of the Sheehy Family. He speaks about the Legacy of Service of the family, the classy way that they take care of families. While so familiar with Bob and Jim Sheehy as contemporaries and their father, he remembers that the service provided to the close-knit community was like an orchestra that hit every note perfectly. He called it “an air of dignity.” That’s something generations of families continued to experience and continued to return to in their time of need. They could focus on grieving and welcoming their friends and family, while Bob, Jim, their outstanding Directors and Staff took care of every other detail.

While so many things have changed about funeral homes, like Pre-planning, Cremation, Memorial Services, etc., it remains vitally important to the Sheehy Family that the continued professional service and that “air of dignity” never change. Generations of the Sheehy Family have been assisting generations of Chicago area families in Burbank and Orland Park for over a century. They’re there when you need them, day or night, every day of the year.
