We wanted openness. We wanted windows, We wanted warmth. We wanted the feeling of home. 

That means every decision made; windows, sunlight, ease of movement, lounge space, amenities, chapel space, parlor space, furnishings, all of it was designed to feel like home. Our families must feel completely comfortable. Kathy Sheehy spent many hours over the years directing the effort to achieve all of these feelings; choosing every surface, every finish, every fabric, every piece of furniture to provide aesthetic beauty and comfort throughout the entire space. 

With hundreds of guests passing through our home, often daily, the need for constant upkeep and maintenance of that beauty and comfort requires a great deal of care and effort. There has been no time over the years that some element of our funeral home wasn’t being remodeled, replaced, updated or enhanced. “We made updates as the preferences of families changed over time. We met the need to add technology as we went along too” says Bob Sheehy. It is a real bonus to be married to a professional Interior Designer. And it shows. 

Kathy Sheehy reiterates that “Comfort was everything. People come here dealing with loss and they’re under very difficult circumstances. Our mission and commitment is to make it a little bit easier.”

We think our Fathers and their father would be very proud. 

The Southwest side of Chicago feels different from anyplace else. Loyalty, Legacy, Tradition; these are all components of the experience of raising a family and celebrating lives in this unique place. Generations of families have trusted us with their loved ones all these years. It’s a remarkable bond that Jim Sheehy thinks about often, and reflects on how his father, his uncle, and grandfather would think about the Sheehy name and service over a hundred years later. 

Sheehy Funeral Home has grown and grown up over a century of honoring these traditions. At Robert Sheehy & Sons, it’s all about options.

Sheehy & Sons Funeral Director & Manager Bill Kiley puts a great deal of emphasis on “options”.  Be it a sudden loss, or a pre-planned circumstance, people are often surprised at just how many different options are available to them. When it comes to final arrangements, there are a wide array of choices available to families of loved ones. Those choices can range from a traditional full service, complete with Visitation, Funeral Service at a Church, through to the cemetery for a Chapel or Graveside Burial Service or above ground mausoleum entombment. With many families choosing Cremation, many of the same options are available with this choice of Disposition, up to inurnment in a Columbarium or even burial. It can be as simple as a Direct Cremation, with few or no other traditional services.

“Families are often unaware of all of the options available with Cremation. We can even plan a Memorial Service at a later date, making it more convenient for people to attend”, according to Bill. The visitation services can be very simple or include beautiful urn floral settings. The visitations can include what traditional services include. Memorial Services can also be outdoors in a Memorial Garden. For Veterans, there is a dedicated Columbarium at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery for interment of urns with full military honors. All of our services can be personalized according to the wishes of families, including photographs, video displays, registry books, service folders, flag cases, personal floral tributes or other themes and motifs providing dignified services for your loved one.

An atmosphere of “Comfort & Love” 

With over a hundred years to think about it and make adjustments along the way; as we even built entirely new buildings and spaces, our focus on the environment we offer our families is always foremost on our minds. As preferences, customs, needs and desired amenities are always changing, we change with them. We’ve listened to families very carefully since the beginning of the Sheehy legacy. When it comes to making our spaces truly special, our mission has been to make our home your home, to receive family and friends celebrating the life of your loved one.  

We’ve moved, remodeled, built, rebuilt, redesigned and remodeled with tremendous frequency over the years. With every change and upgrade we make, our goal is to make our space more comfortable and useful for our families. Bob Sheehy states this,  “From the parlor areas outside of the visitation chapels, to our family lounges, to common corridors, business and planning offices and even restrooms,  every aspect of our building is important”, adding, “Whether a family has experienced a sudden loss, or when people come for Pre-Planning funeral arrangements, it’s very clear that the details and touches of comfort are important to them. We absolutely want people to feel that here; to feel like home”.

The Sheehy Family brought “the neighborhood” to each of their locations over the years.

Bob Sheehy says, “the two most vital things are Reputation and Location”.

That’s absolutely true. A key consideration each time they expanded or moved was to locate themselves in the center of close-knit parishes and faith communities on the south and southwest side of  Chicago. From the very original location at 76th and Halsted in the heart of St. Sabina and St. Leo parishes, to Orland Park in 1988, it was vital to continue to maintain a strong reputation and continue the legacy of service of the Sheehy Family. That reputation has been solid for over 100 years.

 Jim Segredo, whose family has interacted with the Sheehy family for generations, says this, “People all over the southside who grew up and knew the neighborhoods well, understood the Sheehy’s were always there for them.” Whether St. Leo in the early days, or now, St. Michael’s, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Francis of Assisi, Our Lady of the Woods, or the many parishes and churches in the Orland area”.

These days you can add, St. Bernard, St. George, St. Julie Billiart, St. Stephens, Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church, to Parkview Christian Church, Christ Lutheran and All Saints Lutheran Church. In fact, most years we visit over 70 different worship spaces for our families’ arrangements. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve in each and every place our families celebrate their loved ones.

 Jim Sheehy says it succinctly, “the southwest side and south suburbs of Chicago is truly a very unique and very special place”.  It is special and not like anywhere else.

Thank you notes are so precious, we refer to them as “Roses” 

Bob Sheehy and the whole staff at Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home  proudly tells us, “We call them Roses.” 

He’s referring to ‘Thank you notes’  they regularly receive in the mail. These “Roses” are saved in a very large special binder, that can be easily paged through, as a reminder of why it’s so important to provide the best service possible to families. Families who are likely experiencing the most vulnerable days of their lives. It provides a reminder of the kind of effort and deeds that are always treasured and never forgotten for generations to come, in a generational business. As a ‘Family Owned & Operated Funeral Home’, your standard of service is naturally much higher. We commit from the very first contact that you will be treated like family. For over a century, this has been true for us. It’s more than a commitment, though. It’s a covenant between your family and our’s, that we’ve held dear for over a hundred years.   

For the families we serve at Sheehy, services are often emotionally and physically exhausting. When those services are complete, and loved ones who continue to cope with grief, take the time and extra energy to acknowledge our staff, and our work, it means a great deal to us. We’ll find a place for every one of these Roses that are sent to us. Simply put, they remind us of why we chose this vocation and ministry in the first place. It’s not necessary to send a Rose. Many families share with us verbally how pleased they were with our service. But when we do get them, and we get them regularly, it has a positive, energetic, and remarkable effect beyond measure.

Professionally and Personally, Robert Sheehy & Sons are there when you need them.. 

Close friends for decades, Pat Byrne and Bob Sheehy have shared many memorable moments. When Pat experienced a devastating loss, he needed Bob in his professional capacity as a Funeral Director, Pat shares that he didn’t know how Bob was able to be both; his dear friend on a personal level, and the extraordinary professional on another. Pat knew very well that Bob was grieving his loss. Bob was grieving the same loss, while at the very same time taking care of every last detail to ensure flawless services would take place. As Pat recalls, “no stone was left unturned to make sure every last detail was taken care of perfectly.” Generations of Sheehys have been taking care of generations of families all over the southside and south suburbs of Chicago for more than a century. 

This particular arrangement was a difficult one; emotionally, as this was a friend so close to Bob, but he understood the roles he needed to fill for his friend and his professional vocation..

“The families who have trusted us have been associated with our family before my involvement.  My brother Jim and I learned from our father and our uncles how important that connection is with families. We’ve done our best to pass that feeling on to every member of our staff at our funeral home, and ensure that is how we always conduct our services. We are a family taking care of our extended family of people who’ve trusted us for over a hundred years.” That’s how you define “The Sheehy Way”.
